A Few Tips To Get Your Website Noticed
Written by seojunkie on July 21st, 2009
Do you know that the average somebody will spend less than 30 seconds scanning your web page? So much for all that utterly finespun text where you describe everything you do in captivating detail! And guess what? Hardly any one’s reading it. They’re skimming. How about you, are you skimming over this article right now?
Awhile ago I worked with a website traffic analysis software program so I could see how my search engine positioning is going and see what my most clicked on pages were. I was somewhat shocked when I saw how quickly people clicked in and out, especially since I do some PPC - pay-per-click advertising that costs me a pretty penny per click. I had to completely re-think my entire approach… and fast.
In order to have your bases covered, your copy should be written for different types of people. And that is assuming you are getting the right kinds of web traffic.
Write for People Who Like to Scan.
The vast majority of people surfing the web are page scanners. If they see something that grabs them they will stay a bit longer. In order to keep them on the page, use a combination of strategies that will increase user-friendly readability:
• Be sure to use effective headlines and subheadings.
• Use bold text and or high lite words you want to accentuate
• Break up the copy with Text Boxes - again using important points.
• Utilize Web 2.0 - Videos and or photos with keyword captions
• Give them bulleted lists
Make your page scan-friendly, and your reader will quickly be able to realise the important benefits of what your business or product does, without ever being forced to read the small print.
Compose for People Who Love Details:
When you’ve caught some one’s attention with your main headlines, you then want to increase their curiosity with a good story and pertinent information on the rest of the page.
Don’t place too much detail at the beginning. Place the expanded information a level or two deep. Be sure to break up the page with breaks for those page scanners.
Consider Writing for Search Engines:
That’s correct, I said ‘write for ’search engines’ – you know the ones that decide your search engine rankings and position. One of the best ways to improve your search engine rankings is to include the right keywords in your article writing. Now don’t be gratuitous and just place your keywords in a meaningless manner. That can and most likely will get the big G to consider that you are spamming and kick you way back in search engine placements. But do try to use your relevant keywords on every page and in in the headlines.
Another trick is to use a bold font for your keywords, it tells the search engines that that is somehing important. Using the right keywords in your articles & newsletters also grabs the search engines attention. Build your site with meaningful content, just don’t risk losing the page scanners by putting the hard detail right in the beginning..
Try combining all three types of website copy in a harmonious way and it most certainly will lead to much better results.
Focus on keywords.
Restructure your landing page.
Be sure to take the time to properly set up and archive your articles, and I’ll bet you will notice notice more web traffic from people searching for those specific themes.
Don’t be afraid to make some changes, and watch what happens.
Be Fearless
